One Form of Paper Can Beat Gold

At the Texas Numismatic Association show this past weekend, I was struck by the relatively high percentage of dealers with booths whose showcases were at least 50 percent devoted to paper money in place of coins. There is no particular reason why there should be so much paper money on display at this show compared to other coin shows. Overall, I estimate that at least one-quarter of the dealers filled their cases between 50 percent to 100 percent with paper money.

Asia Buys Gold as U.S. Stalls

The stagnant gold and silver markets over the past few months have taken their toll on the enthusiasm of American gold and silver buyers and owners. In the experience of my own company, there has been a mini-surge of buying of bullion-priced coins and ingots upon each significant price dip. However, the buying stops almost as fast as it starts if the price recovers to any degree.

Classic U.S. Gold Coins Weak

Classic U.S. gold coins burdened by extra supplies coming out of Europe put in a weak performance at the Central States Numismatic Society annual convention last week in Schaumburg, Ill. However, many traditional collector coins proved easy to move on the bourse floor at the Renaissance Hotel and Convention Center, which will continue to be the site for this convention for the next four years.
